Ms Penelope Khiat comes from Paris, France, and studied Anglophone Culture and Literature at the University of La Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris, where she graduated in 1997. In 2000, she became a certified English teacher and taught English as a Second Language for eight years in a middle school in an underprivileged area of a Parisian suburb. She set up various extracurricular workshops there, including capoeira and drama classes.  She co-wrote a play with the pupils of the drama club, and the young actors performed it at the end of school year 2006. As Coordinator of the world language department she was responsible for creating a partnership with Jo Richardson’s Community School in London, UK.

She earned certification as a teacher of French as a second Language in March 2009, and decided to develop and improve her knowledge of American culture. She was selected for a teacher exchange program and chose to work at Boston Arts Academy where she will be teaching French language, European culture and Arabic culture. She will organize an electronic correspondence between her French students and BAA’s students so that they can teach each other about their respective cultures and languages.

She has been practicing capoeira (Brazilian martial art) for eight years and was member of a batucada (Brazilian percussion band) for seven years. She was also member of a girl band where she played the drums for two years. She has practiced kick boxing for two years.
