Overview
Students specialize in one of five arts subject areas: visual arts, theatre, dance, instrumental music, or vocal music. Each student spends at least 12 hours a week in arts class, often staying after school on Saturdays to rehearse for a performance. Students’ schedules also incorporate a full college preparatory course load, including humanities, mathematics, science, and a foreign language. Throughout the curriculum, a special emphasis is placed on developing writing skills. In their senior year, students embark on a unique capstone experience: writing a grant proposal to fund an independent community outreach arts project, giving something back for the extraordinary educational opportunities they enjoy at Boston
Arts Academy. |
Academic Requirements |
BAA and Inclusion |
Students must complete the following academic requirements in order to graduate from BAA:
• 4 years of Seminar • 4 years of Humanities • 4 years of Mathematics • 3 years of Science • Most students take 2 years of World Languages |
Boston Arts Academy is proud to be the first Boston Public School that has been named a full inclusion high school.
Our application and audition process is academic blind; our students come with a wide range of academic strengths and needs. Our commitment is to support and to challenge each student. |
Arts Major Requirements |
Senior Project |
4 years of major instruction with: • C- or better in freshman year • C+ or better in sophomore year • B- or better in junior year • B- or better in senior year
In addition, majors require senior exhibitions or performances. |
Each senior writes and presents an original grant proposal to a panel of outside funders. Proposals include identification of a community-based arts need, a budget, a timeline, and an evaluation. Through a competative process, 15 students are chosen to implement their grants. Those students are designated "Senior Project with Distinction" graduates. |
Open Honors |
In our heterogeneously grouped classes - humanities, advisory/writing, and science - students have the opportunity to earn Open Honors distinction. Students may self-select to apply to receive honors. In addition, some students may be required to fulfill an honors curriculum. Students applying for honors must maintain an intial grade average of 83%, complete additonal portfolio assignments, and fulfill addtional requirements for exhibitions in order to be considered for the Open Honors designation. Students' transcripts will reflect the honors credit. College look for students who maximize their opportunities. Open Honors is one such opportunity. |
